ServiceNav 3.19 – SNMP TRAPS – News / Plug-in Updates

Back to news

In Brief

SNMP TRAPS, in addition to using polling as a source of alerts

Some devices offer, through their SNMP MIBs the ability to send TRAPS.

TRAPS are events sent by the devices, that can result in status changes.

ServiceNav now offers TRAPS management through:

  • An initial configuration of the ServiceNav Box (to be done once for each Box)
  • import of MIBs onto the latter
  • Deployment of a specific service template: TRAP-Handle

The principle of operation is as follows:

  • The MIB is loaded on the ServiceNav Box
  • A service running on the SNB will listen (port 162), capture the TRAPS and then transform them into a format readable by ServiceNav (log file)
  • The TRAP-Handle service parses this file and detects state changes
    • within the service, it is necessary to configure  the expression expected for each state; this makes the template generic. When reading a new TRAP matching a configured expression, the state change will be reflected in ServiceNav.
    • it is also possible to specify a timeout, in which case the control will change to OK if no TRAP has been received over this time. This setting is disabled by default.
