Evaluating Your Monitoring Options

There are many different solutions that fall into the “network monitoring” category. As we discussed in our previous blog, there are some which whilst free of charge also impose some significant compromises. This blog looks at some of the other brands you might be considering alongside ServiceNav to show why we’re different.

The first difference is one of organisational scale.  The likes of Solarwinds and GFI are large companies offering  many products to  the IT market.  In contrast, Coservit is a relatively small organisation with only two products targeted at very distinct markets.  Our developers are closely aligned to the sales and support teams which allows for greater collaboration with real customers and rapid response to product development ideas.

Feedback from customers inspired our scalable, agentless, light touch configuration platform which is easy to use “out of the box” compared to solutions from the likes of LabTech and LogicMonitor.  The user interface is perhaps the most important feature to consider early in your evaluation – will your team be able to work with  it and does it  really provide them with the information they need to do a good job?

A further stand out difference is the range of devices that ServiceNav can monitor; the importance of which we discussed in our Cloud Apps and IoT blogs recently.  ServiceNav’s business service centric reporting and multi-tenant capabilities should also stand out as a key benefit for managed service providers who might be looking at solutions like Kaseya, PRTG or Nagios.

From a commercial perspective, the “all in” per server pricing provides cost transparency and predictability when compared to PRTG and Autotask.  The flexibility to go with a SaaS deployment or on premise allows our customers to choose the right solution for them, and to not be limited by a fixed delivery model.

Here’s a checklist of what you could be looking out for in your assessment of network monitoring solutions:

Technical fundamentals 

  • Is the solution delivered on premise, offered as a service, or both?
  • Is the solution agentless or not?
  • How are patches/upgrades delivered?
  • Can the solution handle multi-tenant environments?
  • Can the solution handle the full breadth of technology you need it to?
  • How easily can devices be added or removed from the monitored environment?
  • How scalable is the solution?

Using the solution 

  • Is there a mobile app available?
  • How simple is configuration?
  • How much training is required to use it?
  • How intuitive is the user interface?
  • How is the solution supported?


  • How is the product licenced?
  • How does the charging structure look as your environment scales up?
  • What is the minimum contract term?


  • How are alerts delivered?
  • Can alerts be aligned to business service status reporting?
  • How are user roles defined?
  • What does the reporting look like?
  • How customisable are the reports?
